REZA MIRABI, SABA ALIZADEH, KHALED ABDOU - LANGUAGE OF THE BIRDS

It all started when I heard a field recording from 1987:
the last Moho bird, now extinct, singing for a mate that will never come.
That call felt so familiar. It opened a memory —
a poem I learned as a child: The Conference of the Birds,
a 12th-century Sufi text in which all the birds of the world
set out in search of wisdom in a collapsing world.
That poem has just not let me go for the past three years.

What began as a childhood story has become a critical guide —
a way of sitting with the question: 

How do we respond to a collapsing world?

Language of the Birds is not a performance.
It is a gathering, a process, a way of listening.
It lives in movement, sound, and flicker —
in that subtle space where myth and memory meet crisis.

Real and current stories from Gaza, New Delhi, Tehran, and the Nicobar Islands —
stories of people relearning the language of birds —
intersect with personal experiences of loss, survival, and transformation.

In a time when the word love feels utterly out of place,
this work is a desperate attempt to insist on it,
to commit to whatever is still left of it.
And maybe — probably — we will fail.
But that will not stop us from attempting.
We will not compromise.
Because what else can we do,
but our part?

Reza Mirabi är en konstnär som arbetar i skärningspunkten mellan koreografi, ekologi och lyssnande. Förankrad i tron att varje plats, varelse och material bär på sin egen berättelse, utforskar hans praktik former av lyssnande som kan stämma in oss på dessa mer-än-mänskliga narrativ. Med en bakgrund i socio-politiska och ekologiska projekt över Europa och SWANA-regionen, har Mirabi en kandidatexamen i fri konst från University of Mumbai (2012) och en masterexamen från DAS Choreography i Amsterdam (2021).

Saba Alizadeh är kompositör, kamancheh-virtuos och ljudkonstnär vars arbete rör sig mellan iransk klassisk musik och experimentella ljudpraktiker. Genom att behandla ljud som ett objekt väver han samman traditionella instrument med no-input mixers, modulära synthesizers och arkivinspelningar från fält. Han är utbildad i Experimental Sound Practices vid CalArts, och hans verk utforskar personliga och politiska dimensioner genom elektroakustiska lager och improvisation. Alizadeh har uppträtt internationellt, samarbetat med artister som Hossein Alizadeh och Nour Ensemble, och komponerat för prisbelönta animationer. Han är även grundare av Noise Works, en plattform för experimentell ljudkonst i Teheran, samt en prisad fotograf vars serie Light & Soil har ställts ut globalt.

Khaled Abdou är regenerativ jordbrukare och slagverkare vars arbete rör sig mellan odling och improvisation. Baserad i Bensafrim, Portugal, grundade han Albustan — en levande trädgård för säsongsgrönsaker och jordcentrerade odlingsmetoder. Hans praktiska tillvägagångssätt inom agroekologi är format av många års erfarenhet från landsbygds- och förortslandskap i Afrika, Asien och Europa. Vid sidan av sitt arbete med jorden spelar Khaled tombek och darbuka, där rytm ses som en intuitiv förlängning av lyssnandet — där kompostens, andningens och slagets cykler överlappar i praktik snarare än föreställning

Reza Mirabi is an artist working at the intersection of choreography, ecology, and listening. Rooted in the belief that every place, being, and material carries its own story, his practice investigates forms of listening that can attune us to these more-than-human narratives. With a background in socio-political and ecological projects across Europe and the SWANA region, Mirabi holds a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Mumbai (2012) and an MA from DAS Choreography in Amsterdam (2021).

Saba Alizadeh is a composer, Kamancheh virtuoso, and sound artist whose work moves between Iranian classical music and experimental sonic practices. Treating sound as an object, he weaves traditional instrumentation with no-input mixers, modular synthesizers, and archival field recordings. A graduate of Experimental Sound Practices at CalArts, his work explores personal and political dimensions through electroacoustic layering and improvisation. Alizadeh has performed internationally, collaborated with artists such as Hossein Alizadeh and Nour Ensemble, and composed for award-winning animations. He is also the founder of Noise Works, a platform for experimental sound in Tehran, and an acclaimed photographer whose series Light & Soil has exhibited globally.

Khaled Abdou is a regenerative farmer and percussionist whose work moves between cultivation and improvisation. Based in Bensafrim, Portugal, he founded Albustan—a vibrant garden for seasonal vegetables, and soil-centered farming practices. His hands-on approach to agroecology is informed by years of experience across rural and peri-urban landscapes in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Alongside his work with the land, Khaled plays tombek and darbuka, approaching rhythm as an intuitive extension of listening—where cycles of compost, breath, and beat overlap in practice rather than performance.
